Hammonton Athlete to Compete in 2019 Special Olympics World GamesLast Edited:
NJM Insurance Group (NJM) held a community send-off and luncheon for a Hammonton native who is preparing to compete in the triathlon at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi in March.
On Wednesday, February 27th, NJM presented Chris Wines and his family with a $5,000 check to help with travel expenses.
Wines has participated in the Special Olympics since 2013, competing in swimming, floor hockey, softball, and triathlon, while earning gold medals along the way.
He says that the Special Olympics has helped him improve himself when others had doubts about him.
“I was in situations that they were trying to get rid of, I was always sideline because no one really felt I could do this,” said Wines. “So once I came [to] the Special Olympics I got the sense of ‘I can do this’ and it's helped build me up from there.”
Heather Andersen, president and CEO of Special Olympics New Jersey is glad to see the community come together to help support Wines in his journey to the 2019 Special Olympics World Games
“We’re thrilled for Chris, who is a truly inspiring young man, and equally grateful for NJM’s participation,” said Andersen. “We value the strong support we receive from across the state, so it’s great to see the NJM community in Hammonton rally around Chris as he prepares for the 2019 World Games.”
Chris received a Congressional Commendation presented on behalf of United States Congressman Jeff Van Drew. Hammonton Business Administrator Jerry Barberio and Atlantic County Freeholder Frank Formica provided remarks at the event and presented Wines with proclamations recognizing his achievements.
