Cape May County Authorities Continue to Investigate Fire That Left One Dead

Authorities in Lower Township are investigating a deadly fire that happened early Friday morning.

At around 6:45 a.m. on Friday, January 4th, Lower Township Police were dispatched to the 200 Block of East Florida Avenue for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival they found the homeowner, Joseph Murphy, already outside being attended to by neighbors, suffering from smoke inhalation and other minor injuries.

Officials say his wife, Melody Murphy, did not make it out of the house and was found dead in the upstairs bedroom.

According to the Southern Regional Medical Examiner Office, her cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of the fire.

The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Lower Township Police Department.
