Students and staff at a South Jersey middle school spent the day saying thanks to those who served.

On Wednesday, November 7th,  the student council at Lakeside Middle School in Millville, under the direction of some of its history teachers, held a Veterans Day Celebration and Luncheon.

The event honored local veterans with speeches and videos highlighting the history and importance of Veterans Day.

Officials say the event is not only a great way to honor veterans, but is also a great opportunity to educate students about important events in history.

"Our veterans have done so much for us and it's not just to honor veterans, but our students learn a lot because through interactions with veterans it's a character education," said Robert Trivellini, program coordinator, Millville Public Schools. "And they learn to be better students as well as better people."

During Wednesday's event, students were given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear from 96-year-old World War II medic, Tim Kiniry, who was a witness to the Holocaust.

Students were also able to closely interact with each of the veterans at the luncheon to hear all their stories and experiences.
