ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -

A local man who has made it his mission to give back to the South Jersey community was honored last week.

On Thursday, October 25th, the Community Foundation of South Jersey presented investor and entrepreneur John Scarpa with its Legacy of Giving Award.

The honor was in recognition of the many things Scarpa has supported in the southern New Jersey community, including the Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Center at Inspira Health Network and the John F. Scarpa Technical Education Center of Cumberland County.

The Cancer Center was named for his parents and, in his remarks, Scarpa, who grew up in Vineland, said his mother encouraged him to give to his community.

"I want you to know that inside of me is a guy that cares, just like, just like each and every one of you in this room tonight so it isn't about just writing checks, volunteer-ism to me is far more important to make things happen," said Scarpa.

The event was held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and was hosted by former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil.
