Widely Used Cape May County Bridge to Close for Repairs

AVALON, N.J. -

One of Cape May County's most popular bridges is set to close next week — once again — for renovations.

Cape May County officials are reminding commuters that the Townsends Inlet Bridge, which connects Avalon and Sea Isle City, will close on Monday, September 17th, so seven of the 27 spans can be replaced.

The bridge was closed back in April for emergency repairs to railings, and in 2017 after an underwater inspection of bridge pilings found structural damage.

Officials say the 80-year-old bridge is scheduled to reopen just before Memorial Day weekend in 2019.

This latest project is expected to cost nearly $8.6 million.
