ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -

There’s a new Miss America in town.

On Sunday night in Atlantic City, Miss New York, Nia Franklin, took home the victory and was crowned as Miss America 2019.

She and 50 other contestants competed in the first Miss America pageant to be held without a swimsuit competition in its 98-year history.

That portion of the competition was replaced with an onstage interview in which the contestants were asked a question created by other contestants.

Controversy surrounded this year’s Miss America competition, with most of the Miss America state organizations demanding that national chairwoman Gretchen Carlson and CEO Regina Hopper resign.

The outgoing Miss America, Cara Mund, says the two have bullied and silenced her, claims the organization had denied.
