Man Shot Dead in Millville and Suspects Shoot at Police Officers

MILLVILLE, N.J. -

Cumberland County officials are investigating a shooting that left one man dead early Thursday night.

At around 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 10th, police say 37-year-old Joseph L. Jones was shot and killed in the parking lot of Lakeside Middle School in Millville.

Officials say numerous children were at a nearby football field when the incident occurred.

Representatives with the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office are working to provide a group crisis intervention for the children affected by the traumatic event.

It has been reported to authorities that the individuals responsible were wearing masks and left the area in what is described as a maroon-colored sedan.

Police say while leaving the scene, the suspects fired multiple shots at a law enforcement officer in the area of Garden Road on Route 55 northbound.

The officer was not injured, but the suspects did manage to escape.
