TRENTON, N.J. -

Tragedy struck at a 24-hour arts festival in Trenton over the weekend.

Authorities in Mercer County say the Arts and Music Festival was on its way to being shut down before gunfire erupted early morning on Sunday, June 17th, killing one suspect and injuring 22 other people.

Officials say numerous fights inside and around the venue had prompted police to tell organizers that the event needed to be shut down.

That was when multiple suspects, believed to be part of several neighborhood gangs, began shooting at each other in an apparent dispute.

One suspect, identified as 33-year-old Tahaij Wells, was killed and two other suspects and a 13-year-old boy were injured during the shooting.

Governor Phil Murphy says this act of senseless violence should not discourage the city of Trenton from holding its annual festival, adding it has been a badge of pride for the city and is needed now more than ever.
