A kick-off celebration for the Special Olympics was held in Egg Harbor Township to wish athletes luck at this year's competition.
The Arc of Atlantic County and members of the community came together, on Friday, June 8th, to cheer on and send off this year's athletes competing in the 50th annual Special Olympics of New Jersey this weekend at The College of New Jersey.
And while the sporting events are the main focus for those who watch, for those who compete the events mean so much more.
"It's great to see that the acceptance has come up to a level where it's not [only] just about acceptance, it's our people working hand-in-hand in our community," said Mark Hill, communications coordinator for The Arc of Atlantic County.
50 athletes and 17 coaches, as well as family members and chaperons, left Egg Harbor Township for the competition this morning to compete in aquatics, gymnastics, power-lifting, softball, and tennis.
