OCEAN CITY, N.J. -

The fire and police departments in Ocean City went head to head for a good cause today.

Throughout Thursday, June 7th, the departments faced off in their second annual American Red Cross Battle of the Badges event.

The two departments worked to recruit as many eligible donors as they could to support their team and give blood to those in need.

Officials say the friendly competition not only helps the Red Cross get much-needed blood donations, but it also helps bring everyone in the community a little closer together.

"Patients need blood every day, and we like to say the need for blood doesn't take a vacation, you might, but winter weather, holidays we need blood every single day so we really encourage people to come out and your generosity really does impact your local community as well as the region," said Alana Mauger, communications manager for the American Red Cross.

When the event ends Thursday night, the Ocean City Fire Department is hoping to hold their title as champion and win bragging rights once again this year.

But when no matter what happens, when it comes to giving blood everyone ends up a winner.
