On the Ave: Summer Lineup

The Ave is heating up with events for the coming months.

It seems that the doldrums of late winter weather are finally giving way to spring and summer. The spring/summer banners are up on The Ave, and the events that we’ve planned for The Ave are heating up. So, let’s take a preliminary look at what’s in store for the coming months. You’ll read and hear about each of these in more detail later.

Dine on The Ave—This twice-a-year event runs through this Sunday, May 13. Enjoy a multitude of cuisines from over a dozen downtown restaurants.

Spring Clean-Up and Planting Day—On Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., rain or shine, a group of our volunteers will be cleaning and planting at the mini-parks, at Landis Avenue and the Boulevard, to prep it for the summer downtown activities.

Founder’s Day on The Ave—That same day, we’ll be partnering with The Friends of Historic Vineland as Founder’s Day moves this year to Landis MarketPlace, 631 E. Landis Ave. This iconic event, celebrating Vineland’s heritage, will be held rain or shine that day with some new features. Next year, the event finds its new permanent home at the Palace of Depression on Mill Road. For more details, call 856-205-9334.

Mix, Mingle, & Meet—This opportunity for people and businesses to network and meet takes place every other month on the first Thursday (June 7 and August 2 for the summer), from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Watch for more information on locations.

The Ave Presents….Diamond in the Rough Talent Competition—This first-time event will be taking place on Friday, June 8, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Landis Theater, 830 E. Landis Ave. If you want to participate, you must audition. Auditions will take place on May 21 and 22, from 5 to 10 p.m., at the theater, with rehearsals on May 29 and June 5, from 5 to 10 p.m. Tickets for the show will be $10 for reserved seats and $8 for general admission. For more information, contact the audition committee by e-mail at DITR2018@gmail.com or, by phone, at 856-462-0587.

Cruise Down Memory Lane— Vintage and exotic cars will line Landis Avenue as Cruise Down Memory Lane returns to The Ave for its 27th year on Saturday, June 9, from 5 to 10 p.m.  Rain date is Sunday, June 11, from 2 to 7 p.m. You’ll be reading more about this soon. For more information on the event, call Marv at 856-697-6306 or the day of the show at 856-200-1450, or by e-mailing him at marvin350@hotmail.com. You can also call the Main Street Vineland office.

Play Streets—This new initiative, a collaboration with the Vineland Community Policing, as well as many other civic and non-profit organizations, along with Main Street Vineland, will take place over five Fridays—June 29, and July 6, 13, 20, and 27. For those days, one block of Sixth Street—from Landis Avenue to Elmer Street—will be closed off to traffic and will provide a place for youngsters to engage in games, projects, health-related activities, and other ways to get them outside and engaged in constructive activities. Each week will have a theme. Watch for more information.

Bands on the Bricks—This idea is catching on in a number of communities across the country and we’re doing it here. On July 21, we’ll have musicians—maybe very small group or buskers—at certain spots on The Ave. It’s a way to get people out walking The Ave, patronizing businesses on The Ave, and bringing to The Ave some great sounds. It’ll return again in the fall on October 13.

Food Truck Festival on The Ave—Come hungry for this mega-event, which returns for the second consecutive year on Sunday, August 26.  It will take place, rain or shine, at Landis Avenue and the Boulevard and will feature more than a dozen food trucks, a beer tent, and continuous entertainment and activities. Members 1st of NJ Federal Credit Union will be the major sponsor this year. More information to follow.

We’ll keep you posted on these and other events, so stay tuned!

This is all the more reason to make The Ave your destination for your shopping needs, as well as your dining, entertainment—and living—needs all year round. Save money on gasoline, avoid the long lines at the big-box stores, malls, and shopping centers—and also enjoy the events we have on The Ave. n
