NEW JERSEY -

The U.S. Coast Guard is stressing the importance of getting a vessel safety inspection so recreational boaters can have peace of mind that their boat meets federal safety standards.

The vessel safety inspection is also important so that, in the event of an emergency, they will have the right equipment to save lives and call for help.

Some items boaters should have handy include fire extinguishers, life jackets, distress signals, and navigation lights.

Any boat owners interested in getting a free safety check can download the United States Coast Guard mobile app or visit their website.
