“We do our best to cover the entire spectrum; there is something for everybody,” said Miranda Powell, program assistant for arts education and community arts for the Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts. Powell has helped coordinate the Rutgers–Camden event since its inception.
Over the years Camden Comic Con’s list of things to do and creators, illustrators, and writers to meet has grown. This year features the largest number of female artists and writers in the convention’s history.
Gail Simone, who penned the comic Birds of Prey for DC Comics is headlining the event.
This year’s convention will have more than 20-panel discussions and hands-on workshops in the Campus Center and Fine Arts Building.
Gail Simone and moderator Yissel Ayala will hold a discussion panel covering how to start out and succeeding the comic book industry.
Families can also stop by the kids zone, that feature workshops for children and families that will run from the beginning of the con until the end. Some of the workshops include “Paper Cut Characters,” “Cartooning for Kids,” and “Comics Mad Libs.”
There will be over 150 vendors on the main level of the Athletic and Fitness Center, selling a wide range of comics from the Silver Age through the present day, as well as comics-related memorabilia, art, and merchandise.
Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters and enter the cosplay contest to win prizes and attend the DIY Cosplay Prop Workshop. Meanwhile, kids can walk in the costume parade and all will receive a prize.
Food trucks will also be parked at the college including, Pop Shop A Go Go, Loco Gringo Street Taco Express, Dan’s Waffles, and My Four Suns.
Finally, the Elegance String Quartet will be performing anthems from television, movies, and video games.
The Camden Comic Con is located in the Campus Center and the Athletic and Fitness Center on Third Street, between Cooper Street and Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers-Camden campus.
