Hometown Heroes 2018: Matthew Savela

Last Edited:

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.J.—Matthew Savela, a senior at St. Augustine Prep, needed to select a project as part of the school’s Third Semester Program at the end of his sophomore year. He chose to volunteer at St. John of God, a regional day school for physically and mentally handicapped students in Westville, NJ for two weeks. He was placed into a class with students who were non-ambulatory and nonverbal.

What started as a required school project has turned into a labor of love for Matthew, working with students of St. John of God. Matthew has chosen to volunteer all his days off from school (including his Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks), feeding and interacting with the students and participating in all aspects of the classroom. He has close to 200 volunteer hours at St. John of God and plans to continue to volunteer there during college.
