SOUTH JERSEY -

It's a special day here at SNJ Today as we honor the birthday of our first anchor, Cara McCollum.

On Tuesday, February 6th, the Cara McCollum Birthday Book Project of Southern New Jersey celebrated getting even more books into the hands of South Jersey kids — this time at Bridgeton's Broad Street School.

Our own Mike Frankel and Nick Pittman, along with Miss New Jersey 2017 Kaitlyn Schoeffel, were at the school to speak with the kids about the project and its inspiration, Cara McCollum.

Former SNJ Today news anchor McCollum started the Birthday Book Project in Arkansas when she was still in high school, and she continued the program during her time as Miss New Jersey in 2013.

Cara's goal was to give the gift of reading to children in need on their birthdays.

Since her tragic passing in 2016, volunteers have continued to keep her legacy alive.

If you would like to help the Birthday Book Project bring the joy of reading to kids on their birthdays, please visit our GoFundMe page.
