The numbers have been crunched and it's official — the 2017 New Jersey gubernatorial race was the state's second most expensive race in state history.

The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission says in total, candidates and independent groups spent more than $79 million on the election trail.

Regulators say independent groups set a new record spending $24.5 million. Democratic Governor-elect Phil Murphy spent $14.5 million, while Republican candidate and current Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno spent $5.6 million.

The 2005 election between Democrat Jon Corzine and Republican Doug Forrester remains the state's most expensive governor's race totaling $88.1 million.
