South Jersey Residents Open Their Homes to Coast Guard Recruits

CAPE MAY, N.J. -

For members of the military, being away from their families during the holidays can be tough. To help alleviate some of the loneliness, residents in South Jersey open their homes to U.S. Coast Guard recruits so they can enjoy the holidays, despite being away from home.

On Thursday, November 23rd, host families opened up their homes, and their hearts, to recruits from the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May for the Red Cross' annual Operation Fireside.

For more than 30 years, Operation Fireside has given the recruits a chance to eat a home-cooked meal, a place to call home, and the chance to take a break from Basic Training, at least for a little while during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
