Joe Biden Honors Former Colleague William J. Hughes in Galloway

On Thursday, November 9th, many filed into the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club to honor six special individuals in the Garden State.

“These are individuals that have devoted their lives to promoting civil discourse, to promoting a community engagement, to promoting the good things about politicians and the good things about government,” said Dr. Harvey Kesselman, president of Stockton University.

Each year, Stockton’s William J. Hughes Center recognizes a select group of people who reflect the life and career of Ambassador William J. Hughes, with an award to honor their professional excellence and commitment to public service.

“These individuals represent the best of the best and I could not be more proud to be the president of the university that’s hosting this,” said Kesselman.

The big award of the night went to the man behind the center himself, William J. Hughes.

These individuals represent the best of the best.

“For so many years, Bill Hughes was the person who represented all of the interests in South Jersey and he did so in a way that reached across the aisle,” said Brigid Harrsion, an honoree and professor at Montclair State University.

Hughes was given the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award for the time he spent serving not only New Jersey, but the entire U.S., as well.

During that time, he served in Congress and worked with former Delaware Senator turned Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden.

“For 20 years, Bill and I were not only partners in Congress, but Bill would push things in the House side as I would push the same issues in the Senate side,” said Biden.

The former vice president went on to honor his friend and colleague’s legacy over the years.

“Bill’s lifetime achievement doesn’t really cover it," said Biden.

"Your accomplishments and contributions could fill many successful lives. But far better than any award you can receive is the knowledge that your legacy continues to inspire new leaders through this Center for Public Policy that bears your name.”
