Rowan University’s chapter of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers hosted Rowan’s 15th annual Pumpkin Chunkin’ contest on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at the South Jersey Technology Park in Mantua Township, New Jersey.
Cape May County Technical School, Millville High School, Washington Township High School, Cherry Hill High School East, Glassboro High School, Verona High School, LEAP Academy University Charter School, Philadelphia University, Temple University, The College of New Jersey, and the University of Delaware participated in this year’s event.
Teams built and competed with functional Angry Birds-themed pumpkin-throwing catapults, trebuchets, and ballista capable of launching pumpkins across a 400-foot range.
The throwing machines could be up to 12-feet tall and have up to 500 pounds of counterweight attached.
The goal of Pumpkin Chunkin’ is to promote science, technology, engineering, and math education.
For the second year in a row Millville High School's engineering club teams dominated the competition.
Just like last year, Millville High School sent two teams to compete. One team consisted of all girls and the other team was all boys. The boys team hit a special target near the center of the field worth significant bonus points several times giving them a distinct advantage. Millville's boys team came in 1st place, winning a trophy and a $500 3D printer.
Millville's girls came in second, winning a trophy and multi-tools for the team members. In 3rd place was a team from Rowan University, winning a trophy and a Doodle Pen.
