ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -

New Jersey State officials are looking to honor a beloved senator and friend to Atlantic City — in a big way.

Senate President Steve Sweeney announced plans to introduce new legislation to dedicate Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City as Senator Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in his memory.

Whelan died last month at the age of 68 following a heart attack. He was known for being a friend and helping hand to many in South Jersey, dedicating years of his life fighting to protect the area, especially Atlantic City, where he served as mayor for three terms beginning in 1989.

Officials say they couldn't think of a more perfect way to honor an Atlantic City icon than dedicating Atlantic City's iconic and historic entertainment venue to him.
