The 2018 Miss America Pageant's onstage preliminary competitions are underway in Atlantic City.

On Wednesday, September 6th, Miss Texas (Morgana Wood) won a $1,000 scholarship with the lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit award, while Miss Utah took home the talent award, which yields a $2,000 scholarship.

While Wood, who is the reigning Miss Texas 2017, said that her thoughts are with family and friends in Houston, it seems their well wishes for her paid off.

"I’m so excited to be here in Atlantic City, but my heart is absolutely there in Houston," said Wood. "That’s my home."

Wood is sending her prayers to all of those who are experiencing the dreadful aftermath of the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.

"I just send my love to all of them and hope that the recovery process [goes] as smooth as possible," said Wood. "We’re taking it day by day."

Also on Wednesday, Miss New Jersey Kaitlyn Schoeffel competed in the talent portion of the program and performed the jazz dance known as en pointe.

On Thursday, September 7th, she will answer a question on stage.

The final night of preliminary competition is on Friday, September 8th, where Schoeffel will compete in the swimsuit and evening wear competitions.
