ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -

The Atlantic County Democrats have announced who will be stepping in to fill the New Jersey State Senate seat of the late Senator Jim Whelan.

Officials announced early Wednesday, September 6th, that they unanimously approved former Atlantic County Freeholder Colin Bell to complete Jim Whelan's unexpired term.

Bell will be officially sworn in to the seat later this year.

Whelan died last month at the age of 68 after suffering a heart attack at his home.

Whelan announced in January that he was not seeking re-election, and Bell is the party's candidate for the seat in November's elections.
