South Jersey 'Angels' Helping Texas Schools with Donation DriveLast Edited:
Over the years, the Angels Community Outreach group has helped countless of families in need throughout South Jersey.
Now the nonprofit is expanding its reach by helping the youngest people affected by Hurricane Harvey.
“We’re collecting backpacks that we’ve been giving out to families in need locally," said Kristy Zinni, a volunteer with the organization. "But now we’re going to be shipping them to schools in Texas that are obviously in need of backpacks and school supplies.”
“We got in contact with some teachers that are partnering up with classrooms affected by the hurricane in Texas,” said Elissa Darrow, director of the organization.
Right now we have five classrooms that we’re adopting and I’m sure there are many, many more that need supplies down there.
“Right now we have five classrooms that we’re adopting and I’m sure there are many, many more that need supplies down there,” said Zinni.
The Angels received supply lists from teachers in Texas so they can ship off exactly what the students there need.
Some schools have no supplies to start the school year off because the classrooms were under water.
Volunteers have already started packing up the hundreds of bags for students of all ages.
“[Each] backpack is full with supplies," said Darrow. "We’re going to collect other supplies. We’re also collecting like toiletries and diapers and wipes.”
The Angels are asking for everything from backpacks to binders in conjunction with its donation drive.
“The only way we can do this is with donations," said Zinni. "Just anything you would need in a regular school day.”
“Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday we’ll be here from 9 to noon," said Darrow. "We’ll collect through the 16th of this month and everything will start to be shipped on the 17th."
“We just want every kid to be able to start their school year off on the right foot so they can have a great school year,” said Zinni.
