NEW JERSEY -

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy has announced his running mate for the 2017 election in New Jersey.

On Wednesday, July 26th, Murphy announced that Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver will be joining his ticket as the candidate for lieutenant governor.

Oliver was the first first African-American woman to serve as assembly speaker, before losing the position to Vincent Prieto in 2013. She currently represents the 34th District in the state, which includes the Essex County municipalities of East Orange, Montclair, and Orange; and the Passaic County city of Clifton.

Murphy's opponent, and current lieutenant governor, Kim Guadagno, is expected to announce her running mate this week.
