Tips on Preventing Forest Fires

NEW JERSEY -

Although the cause of Thursday and Friday's Wharton State Forest fire is undetermined as of this time, the United States Forest Service advises that about nine out of 10 fires are caused by people.

The U.S. Forest Service offers tips on ways you can prevent wildfires from starting.

  • If you're camping, before leaving your campsite, make sure your campfire is completely out.
  • Check local regulations and fire conditions before burning debris.
  • Be aware of sparks from lawn mowers and power equipment that can start fires.
  • Have a shovel or fire extinguisher nearby to stop the flames.
