OCEAN CITY, N.J. -

While some may have found Thursday's rain to be undesirable, others found it to be the perfect condition for building sand castles.

On Thursday, July 6th, beachgoers in Ocean City came out to create works of art in the sand for the city's first sand-sculpting contest of the summer.

Families and participants of all of ages hit the sand to make detailed castles, sea creatures, and other creative creations in a day that was fun for everyone.

"There [are] a lot of people that work very hard to make special memories happen for our visitors and residents," said Michael Hartman, special events coordinator for Ocean City. "Sand sculpting is a great way to celebrate the hard work of everyone that made this a special event."

Hartman hopes the event will become an annual fixture in Ocean City.

"It's really neat to take a traditional summer activity and make sure it's around for many years to come," said Hartman.

Ocean City will be holding another sand-sculpting contest on Thursday, August 3rd, which will be the next chance for you to try your hand at building a sandy masterpiece of your own.
