WOODBURY, N.J. -

The New Jersey Women in Law Enforcement Organization awarded Sergeant Danielle Lorusso of the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office with the Abigail Powlett Police Officer of the Year Award.

The award is presented to a law enforcement officer who is dedicated to improving the lives of citizens in the community they serve in.

Lorusso has served as an officer for 23 years and was nominated by Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton for all her hard work with the GCPO and for her community outreach program that teaches kids and their families about substance abuse.

This was the first year the organization presented the annual award in memory of Plainfield police officer Powlett, who was killed in the line of duty in 1985.

Powlett's family was also there to support the deserving officer.
