'Shark Tank' Inspires Community Improvement Event

MILLVILLE, N.J. -

The show where regular people present their ideas to investors was the inspiration behind a community improvement event held in Cumberland County.

The inventor show, Shark Tank, was the basis for the event, which featured Lakeside Middle School in Millville where students who, after months of research, presented their ideas on how to better their community to the Millville Neighborhood Alliance.

The students first met with Alliance members last summer to discuss areas in the city that they can work to improve. They then studied the problems before gathering on Tuesday, March 21st, prepared to solve them. Student suggestions included park cleanups, after-school activities for teens, a skate park, and the creation of a positive graffiti wall.

"We have the future of the City of Millville, these young people standing around me that have great ideas and how they want to promote the City of Millville in a great positive way," said Millville Mayor Michael Santiago.

Students involved in this project were members of AVID, a college readiness program that allows students to choose groups based on interests.
