Hometown Heroes 2017: Carlos RamosLast Edited:
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.J. – Staff Sergeant Carlos Ramos retired from the U.S. ARMY after a distinguished 20-year career that included a total of four years in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a part of the 173rd Airborne SKY Soldier Brigade, he fought in the “Surge” of troops during the Iraq War in 2004 through 2005. During his time in Europe in the late 1990s through 2007, he was part of the 173rd Airborne Sky Soldiers. Stateside, he was based out of Fort Lewis WA, 1st Special Forces Group GSB and in Fort Bragg NC, in the 82nd Airborne Division. In his long and dangerous career, he earned a Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals (MSM), eight Army Commendation Medals (ARCOM), and 10 Army Achievement Medals (AAM.)
He described his experience in the Middle East simply as “ a lot of incidents we had to take care of to keep out of trouble.”
He’s settled in Vineland now—his wife Yinnie Vazquez has family here and works for OMNI Baking Co. He works as a Production Supervisor for BRIDOR Baking Co. They have four children, ages 15 through 20. Both SSG Ramos and his wife volunteer at the Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland.
He appreciates being able to relate to other veterans, and knows they feel the same about him.
