Hometown Heroes 2017: Debbie Albano

Last Edited:

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.J. – Debbie Albano is well known as a piano teacher in and around Vineland. Perhaps not as well known, she is a mentor and a friend to the two students and family that nominated her for this Hometown Hero award. (And to many others she’s helped in her more than 30 years of teaching.) “In all honesty,” her student writes, “she has imparted her wisdom through her own experiences and feels like part of our family.”

She was a music major and taught nursery school children at a Vineland synagogue, has served as music director and board member of the famous Gabriel Project, and, in private lessons, has introduced literally hundreds of students to national piano performance and competition. Debbie and her family have sponsored the annual “Michael’s Scholarship” for many years as a memorial since their dear son Michael died in a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver.

“She is a hero to our family,” the nominators wrote. And now she’s recognized as a Hometown Hero, too.
