PITMAN, N.J. - Jeff Sanders recalls fondly, as a child, seeing his first new bike under his family’s Christmas tree and wanted to help families, especially those experiencing hardships during this time of the year, to be able to share this moment with their children as well, so he began a charity organization called "Pop's Dream."
Now in its second year, this charitable organization, through the generous support of area business owners, friends, and colleagues, had raised enough in 2015 to purchase 60 bikes and $3,000 in grocery cards. This year Sanders’ goal is higher— to purchase 100 bikes and $4,000 in grocery certificates. His charity is already at halfway to the goal and he hopes to reach his target this year.
Sanders came up with the name because his own father was a master mechanic who could repair anything.
“Automotive, electrical, carpentry, you name it, he knew how to do it,” Sanders said, “and in his later years, my father started repairing bicycles he bought at yard sales or found discarded, and gave them to neighborhood kids whose families he knew probably couldn’t otherwise afford. He was my inspiration for this drive”.
Bicycles and grocery certificates from this campaign will be distributed among the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce Kids' Breakfast with Santa event in December; the Boys and Girls Clubs of Gloucester County Christmas Party, where Jeff is the Resource Development Director; the Borough of Pitman`s Giving Tree program, and the Friends of the Grove Christmas Blessing program.
There's still time to contribute to "Pop's Dream" if anyone is interested and all donations are fully tax deductible. While all contributions are welcome, a minimum of $50 buys a bike, and $150 buys a bike and $100 in grocery money. All those who donate are welcome to join in for a group photo and local news coverage on Friday, December 9th, at the Deptford Walmart on Cooper Street.
The deadline for donations is Tuesday, December 13th. Checks can be made payable to "Pop's Dream” and mailed to P.O. Box 142 Pitman NJ 08071. For more information about the charity, contact Sanders at 609-617-5533.
