WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Michael J. D’Ostilio Jr. has been chosen as principal of Bunker Hill Middle School (BHMS) by the Washington Township Board of Education. D’Ostilio is to replace the provisional principal, Joe Vandenberg, on January 3rd, 2017, and marks the fourth full-time lead administrator in the school’s 19-year run.

“Mike D’Ostilio will be a great asset to our district,” said Superintendent of Schools, Joe Bollendorf. “He brings with him a vast amount of experience and knowledge in education, a strong background in curriculum, and professional development leadership with differentiated instruction, instructional design, and theory. He is well-versed in the needs of middle school-aged students and committed to ensuring all aspects of their development and academic growth and success.”

Prior to his appointment at BHMS, D’Ostilio served as assistant principal at Gateway Regional Middle School where he started in 2008. His accolades include preparation of 504 district proposals and acted as leader for investigating harassment and schemes of bullying.

In the years leading up to his administrative position in 2008, he also served as the district’s English supervisor for five consecutive years after teaching English at Spotsylvania High School in Virginia from 1998 to 2003. His mission was to elevate curriculum through revision of modules, rubrics—and even reinstatement of a long-gone summer reading program focusing on contemporary literature.

D’Ostilio earned a master’s degree in public school administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 after graduating from the University of Mary Washington with a bachelor’s degree in English four years prior.

He and his wife, Dr. Jennifer D’Ostilio, reside in Washington Township with their three children, Andrew, Amelia, and Allyson.
