New Jersey Department of Transportation to Practice Hurricane Evacuation Procedures

MILLVILLE - State troopers and officials from the transportation department are testing hurricane evacuation procedures today along major roadways.
Digital message signs will notify motorists of the drill and no roads will be closed.
Officials will conduct the drill on:

  • The entire length of the Atlantic City Expressway from Atlantic City to Washington Township

  • Garden State Parkway, from mile marker 0 on the in Lower Township to mile marker 38 in Egg Harbor

  • I-195, from mile marker 6 in Robbinsville to about mile marker 34 in Wall

  • Route 72, from mile marker 0 in Woodland to about mile marker 29 in Ship Bottom

  • Route 47, from mile marker 16 to 21 in Dennis, and mile marker 32 to 35 in Maurice River

  • Route 347, from mile marker 0 in Dennis to about mile marker 9 in Maurice River

The drill will practice and prepare a contraflow, a lane in which traffic flows in the opposite direction of surrounding lanes. During a major hurricane, these lanes will serve as evacuation routes.
