VIDEO: Local Nine-Year-Old Plans on Starting Theater CampPosted:
NEWFIELD - Naomi Jones, a fourth grader at Edgarton Christian Academy, decided she wanted to ignite her passion for the arts and start camp for children in her community.
"She’s nine years old, but she has the fearlessness of three or four times her age," said Andre Jones, father of Naomi Jones. "She wants to have dance, singing, and theatre, also set preparation, and things of that nature. So every aspect of theatre, she wants to expose the children in the community to it."
"There are many other people that can do this the same thing that I can do, and like, there’s camps in Millville and Vineland, but there usually aren’t any camps in Bridgeton," said Naomi. "That’s where I live! So I’m like, I think I should do a camp that’s in Bridgeton so other kid s can do the same thing I want to do."
"She wants to open it to the community here in Bridgeton for children that don’t have the opportunity to go to maybe Vineland or Millville for the same type of thing," Melody Jones, mother of Naomi.
Naomi’s goal is to share her passion with theatre with other local children in Bridgeton. She’ll be holding her three week camp, called Camp Me2, here at the Alms Center, starting in August.
"She wants to open it to the community here in Bridgeton for children that don’t have the opportunity to go to maybe Vineland or Millville for the same type of thing," Melody Jones. She added, "She’s calling it Camp Me Too, which stands for, because her nickname is actually Mimi, so she made an acronym for her name, which is Making an Impact Move to Inspire."
Naomi Jones has performed in New York, Atlantic City, at the Levoy Theatre, and with the Off Broad Street Players, just to name a few. She is currently practicing to play Little Inez in “Hairspray,” but isn’t letting her performance distract her from planning her camp. Jones has already found local community members involved in theatre to help, and even Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly is helping bring her idea to life.
"I am so excited because I can’t wait to like, have the kids be excited about it and see them smile and enjoy themselves," said Naomi.
