Camden County Combats Drug Abuse with New InitiativePosted:
Camden County - Camden County's new drug abuse program will set up intensive care and rehabilitation for drug addicts post-overdose.
The pilot program was unveiled Wednesday and looks to provide detoxification and intensive outpatient drug treatment for people brought into emergency rooms after overdosing.
Officials say that a lot of times after overdoses, drug abusers leave the emergency room and almost immediately get more drugs.
The program is using $150,000 in taxpayer money, a portion of which comes from a homelessness prevention trust fund. That money is enough to help 50 addicts.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office has been running a similar program successfully since earlier this year with the help of area health care providers.
