VINELAND – Johnstone Elementary School and Rowan University renewed their partnership on Tuesday, October 6th during the unveiling of a new banner. The banner, which promoted Johnstone’s status as a Professional Development School, was displayed during a ceremony that marked the occasion.
Several participants spoke at the ceremony including former Principal of Johnstone, Dr. Lois Karwowski, who reflected on the history of the Rowan/Johnstone relationship, which has existed since 2000.
Dean of the Rowan University College of Education, Dr. Monika Shealey, followed Karowski by outlining the goals and hopes of the program and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mary Gruccio, focused on the importance of the affiliation between both schools.
Sylvia Morano, current Principal of Johnstone, announced a plan to further develop the partnership in order to benefit more children and Associate Dean of the College of Education, Lisa Vernon-Dotston, introduced significant members of the team and focused on the importance of the partnership.
According to the Rowan University website, Professional Development Schools (PDS) are "innovative institutions formed through partnerships between colleges of schools of education and P-12 schools. Their mission is professional preparation of teacher candidates, faculty development, inquiry directed at the improvement of practice, and enhanced student learning. These schools are more than sites for field placements for teacher candidates. A PDS is an environment in which university students, faculty liaisons, classroom teachers, and students in the schools can engage in long-term, on-going research-based initiatives that benefit all members in the learning community."
