VIDEO: New Skate Park Opens in Ocean City

Ocean City - Kick flips, heel flips, and big flips are coming back to Ocean City.
“We had a skate park in town years ago, and it was right next to the ocean, so over time the metal corroded because of the salt air, so we had to close it down for safety reasons, and we’ve worked with Cape May County now to build this new skate park to provide the kids and adults that skate in town an opportunity,” explained James Mallon, City Administrator.
After years of planning and communicating with the local skateboarding community, the park’s construction started this past spring. The park opened last Thursday, and has been filled with eager skateboarders ever since.
“We have several ramps, some street skate areas, as well as a snake, and a pretty deep bowl for the more advanced skaters,” said James Mallon.
“Compared to all of the other ones I’ve been to in New Jersey, this one is by far, I’d say biggest, nicest.  I mean, you get big crowds of people. I hope it stays maintained well so it’s always open,” said Joseph Gerace of Mays Landing.
“It’s important that we’re out here and doing inspections on a daily basis to make sure we continue to make it, ensure that it’s safe,” said Mallon. “The Township asks for skateboarders to wear protective gear as they enjoy the brand new park, located at 5th and Asbury Avenues in Ocean City.”
“We have a lot of year-round residents who skate, but we also have a lot of tourists come to town whether for a week, the summer, or for a weekend, who participate in skating, so we felt it really was an asset for our visiting community,” continued Mallon.
The skate park will be open from 9 a.m. to dusk all year round. City officials encourage all skateboarding visitors to visit the park and see what Ocean City has to offer.
“We’re glad we’re here, it was a little difficult when it was still under construction, the folks were ready to jump in, so we’re happy it’s opened, and we’re glad to provide just another great resource,” said Mallon.
