Birches Elementary School Welcomes the Musicopia Organization

TURNERSVILLE - Birches Elementary School students were serenaded by jazz music on Monday, November 9th thanks to a Washington Township Education Foundation mini-grant.
The grant enabled three representatives from the Musicopia organization to visit the students and provide a music lesson in a session entitled, “Jazzing it up with the Harp.”
The lesson included the history of the harp and its use in modern music such as jazz as well as the history of the drums and bass. Students also listened to the trio play jazz hits from John Coltrane and others. They were also invited to the front of the room to practice using the instruments.
Gloria Galante, Chris Coyle, and Leon Jordan Sr. also played familiar songs like “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid, “When You Wish Upon a Star,” “The Rainbow Connection,” and “Linus and Lucy.” Galanta played the harp while Coyle served as double-bassist, and Chris Coyle worked percussion.
Galante is a professor and founder of the West Chester University harp program which was founded in 1990. Galante is a composer of works, transcriptions, and therapeutic pieces for the harp and has worked as a solo artist, chamber musician, and member of ensembles and orchestras.
Currently, Galante is performing in the Warren Oren Philadelphia Freedom Jazz Orchestra. Galante is the principal harpist in the Divine Hand Ensemble, a nine-piece chamber ensemble.
