Millville Army Air Field Museum Celebrates 14th Annual Veterans Appreciation Day

MILLVILLE - The Millville Army Air Field Museum (MAAFM) will pay tribute to United States Veterans on Saturday, November 7th.
The Museum, along with several high school students and community members, invite all veterans to attend the event at Millville Airport for the 14th Annual Veterans Appreciation Day.
“Each year we are proud to salute America’s veterans of all wars at this unique commemorative ceremony at Millville Airport,” says Robert Trivellini, MAAFM Vice President and Educational Coordinator. “This year the Museum will feature a ceremony honoring the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, a major battle of WWII in which US Marines landed on and eventually captured the island from the Japanese Imperial Army. The battle, which took place over five weeks — February 19 through March 26, 1945 — resulted in 26,000 U.S. casualties including 6,800 lives lost. The Japanese lost more than 18,000 lives from fighting or ritual suicide. Certainly this was a defining battle of the War in the Pacific during WWII.”
Guest speaker, and WWII Veteran, Walter Kocielski will be present at the event. Kocielski fought on Iwo Jima where only six of the 56 men in his unit survived the first week. “We are very honored to have Walter Kocielski speak and to hear first-hand about his experience and the stories of others who made the ultimate sacrifice,” continues Trivellini. “This is a very special presentation for all of our veterans and guests.”
The museum grounds will include several displays, including re-enactment groups, military vehicles, antique automobiles from the Cohanzick Antique Auto Club, an A-4 Skyhawk, the C-23 Short Sherpa, and model airplane exhibits.
The activities will also include a free canteen lunch for visitors sponsored by Verna’s Flight Line Restaurant and Catering and paper products provided by South Jersey Paper Products.  Semper Marine Detachment 205 of Vineland will present a musical salute to veterans as well as a presentation of the colors at 11:00 a.m.
“The Millville Army Air Field Museum is honored to commemorate our veterans while educating and entertaining the community using the talents and energy of our young people,” says Lisa Jester, MAAFM executive director. “We are very proud to present our Veterans Appreciation Day to the public. Together we recognize and honor the valuable role of America’s veterans and thank them for their many contributions and sacrifices.”
