Saint Joseph Regional School Graduate Hosts Fundraiser for Students

SOMERS POINT - David and Tricia Hughes of Somers Point opened their home to hold a fundraiser for Saint Joseph Regional School students. David is the Co-chairman of the Saint Joseph Regional School Board and Chief Financial Officer at Shore Medical Center. Tricia and her brothers all attended Saint Joseph Regional School.
The purpose of the event was to raise funds for students requiring financial assistance at the school. Orlando Martinez and Maria Baldino, two students who have benefited from their saint Joseph’s education, spoke at the fundraiser to describe their experiences at the school. Martinez’s mother, Abby, works several jobs in Atlantic City in order to provide her son with an education.
Principal of Saint Joseph Regional High School, Ted Pugliese, expressed his gratitude to those involved in the fundraiser. "The community came together in the spirit of Christian charity to help our students, and for this I am truly grateful. I appreciate everyone who attended and donated at this event, and a special thank you to David and Tricia Hughes for opening their home to us and for the $8,000 matching donation they personally made so our students who need assistance can continue to receive the high quality educational opportunity at Saint Joseph's."
"Though we do not have any children of our own, Saint Joseph's holds a special place in our hearts," said David Hughes. "We know there are a lot of families facing difficult financial times right now, so we thought if we could get 25 to 30 people together we could hopefully raise a few dollars for the school. The response to the event was incredible. We had to stop taking RSVPs at 70 people. We had hoped to raise $20,000, but the donations far exceeded our wildest expectations. Donations so far are more than $30,000, and we are still counting."
Saint Joseph Regional School is also planning a Spring Gala, which will focus on the showing of community and fellowship exhibited at the last year’s gala. The event will be held at the Ocean City Yacht Club on Saturday, March 19th, 2016.
