MILLVILLE - The Millville Chamber of Commerce has chosen 96-year-old Luella Dreyer as its January recipient of the Outstanding Citizen award.
“Over the years, this sharp, now retired math teacher from northern New York State, is known for her diligent and caring kindness," said Rev. Gerritt Kenyon, retired long-time pastor of First Assembly of God Church. "She has left a mark in the community with her tutoring, helping friends — especially in times of illness — volunteering in the church office, including bookkeeping, vacation bible school, and various service groups.’’
Kenyon also mentioned that Dreyer teaches at the “Seniors for Life” bible study group and does a superb  job.
Dreyer graduated from New York State College for teachers (now known as SUNY). She has also taken graduate courses at the University of Wisconsin and Rowan University.
She is a native of Lowville, N.Y., and taught for five years in New York before her family moved to Millville, N.J., in 1950. From 1965 to 1985, she taught at Millville Memorial High School.
“I’m very proud of the successful careers that many of my former students have,” Dreyer said.
Dreyer attended every MMHS graduation ceremony until a couple of years ago.
“I would tell my students, 'You’re going to go far beyond what I accomplished,'” she said.
Before becoming active in First Assembly of God in the late 1970s, the Dreyer family attended First United Methodist Church, where Dreyer was active in various groups, including being a Cub Scout den mother. D
Reyer said that she feels the church youth groups do many positive things in the community.
In addition to three sons, Dreyer has six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The Greater Millville Chamber of Commerce will honor Dreyer at its January luncheon on Wednesday, January 13, at the New Jersey Motorsports Park.  The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and costs $20 to attend with a reservation; $25 on the day of the event. Reservations are required by Friday, January 8, and can be made by calling 856-825-2600.
The purpose of the Outstanding Citizen Award is to recognize individuals in the Greater Millville community for doing positive things for others and for the greater good of the area.
