VIDEO: Harrison Township Police Warn Community About Porch Pirates

HARRISON TOWNSHIP - The Harrison Township Police Department shares tips on how people can stay safe against package theft this holiday season.
“We had one incident where a package was taken from someone’s front porch and that prompted us to put that out to our Facebook and Twitter accounts,” said Chief Thomas Mills, Harrison Township Police Department.
The Harrison Township Police Department posted this to their Facebook account earlier this month trying to help its residents avoid the dreaded “Porch Pirates.” When people take packages right off of door steps.
“One of the things that we always encourage people to do is to make sure if they’re getting a package and the service allows you to, have some type of notification in place where they email you and let you know that it’s there,” said Chief Mills.
Once you get that notification you can ask a neighbor or relative to grab the package so it’s not out in the open. Sometimes when you go to check out online major retailers give you the option to ship-to-store avoiding the front step altogether.
“Like a JcPenney’s or something like a Sears or Macy’s or something along the line where some of them offer the availability to ship to their local store so you can pick it up there,” said Chief Mills.
And if that’s not an option, if your employer allows you, having the retailer ship the package to your office is a smart move so it’s not sitting out on your step all day.
“It’s just things that people don’t really think about, but it doesn’t take that much time," said Chief Mills. "But in the long run, it’s better for everybody.”
Another option would be to require a signature upon delivery.
“Every little bit helps, it helps us," said Chief Mills. "Safety and security is everybody’s responsibility so if you see something say something.”
