VIDEO: Egg Harbor Township PAL Hosts Annual Shop with a Cop Event

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - The Egg Harbor Township PAL hosted its 5th Annual Shop with a Cop event over the weekend, giving local children the chance to go on a shopping spree with a police officer.
“We actually have 140 plus kids, we have over 70 officers from 19 different law enforcement agencies around South Jersey this year," said Bob Ortiz, Chairman of the Board, Egg Harbor Township PAL. "They will go around with their assigned police officers and they will actually go shopping through Walmart. So the kids are going to get a shopping cart, they’re going to walk around with the law enforcement officials, have a lot of fun in there, picking out gifts, pretty much anything the kids want to get with the money that’s allotted to them.”
Police officers and companies around Atlantic County donate money towards this once a year event to give each child around $100 to pick out special presents with the help of their officers.
“A lot of times when people deal with us, they’re in trouble, or we’re the bad guys, so it’s really nice to get out there and interact with people in a situation when it’s fun and light,” said Ptl. Corey Sprague, Brigantine.
The police officers say the smiles on each child's face is their favorite part.
“Favorite part about today, is the expression on the kid’s faces, they’re so excited, you see officers giving piggy back rides, they’re interacting with the kids, the kids are smiling ear to ear,” said Chief John Thompson, Mullica Twp. P.D.
Not only are the police officers and children grateful, but so are the parents.
“For us as parents, it’s a huge blessing," said Adrienne Snow, Parent. "For us, we’re just so thankful that the community comes together and participates like this, and it’s truly a blessing that our kids are able to participate in this.”
