VIDEO: First Case of West Nile Virus Confirmed in Atlantic County
ATLANTIC COUNTY - Health officials are notifying Atlantic County residents after confirming the first positive West Nile virus sample this year. West Nile, a mosquito-borne disease, has been confirmed in Northfield, where county public health and mosquito control officials are implementing a surveillance system and using additional control measures within the vicinity of Birch Grove Park. Residents living within 500 feet of that area will be notified and provided with educational information materials. The division of public health that works with the Office of Mosquito Control is encouraging residents to prevent the spread of West Nile with some simple steps. They say to avoid mosquito bites, use an insect repellent when outdoors, and rid properties of mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water.
