Selected Washington Township High School freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will soon have the opportunity to study abroad in the summer thanks to a $20,000 award recently granted to the school by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE).
“These summer study abroad programs are offered by CIEE and feature top-notch academics and cultural immersion, combined with exciting activities and travel in one of 16 amazing destinations around the world,” said District world language supervisor Rosemarie Armstrong. “This is an exciting and rare opportunity for our students to explore places they’ve seen only in photographs and gain experiences that will prepare them for college and beyond.”
Selected students will have the opportunity to pick between three types of programs. The Language and Culture program will allow students to stay with a host family or have a dormitory experience, interact with native-speaking peers, and use their new language skills to explore and experience the country while building language fluency and cultural savvy.
Students in the Service and Leadership program will be able to take part in a community project and develop skills that will help them serve as global citizens. They can focus on children’s rights, education, or public health and earn a certification for 45 hours of service.
The Content Studies program will have students explore communication arts, environmental science, global entrepreneurship, or marine science in Botswana, Bonaire, Spain, or Ireland.
A parent information night for WTHS students who may be interested in applying for the study abroad program is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28th at 6:30 pm in the school’s 11-12 auditorium. Scholarships covering 10 to 100 percent of the program tuition are awarded based on merit and financial need. It does not cover airfare, passport and visa fees, or personal spending money.
Included in the destinations of the 2015 CIEE high school summer study abroad programs are Rabat, Morocco; Nanjing, China; Toulouse, France; Berlin, Germany; Ferrara, Italy; Tokyo, Japan; Guanajuato, Mexico; Seville and Madrid, Spain; and Dublin, Ireland.
