HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Details of a $32.7 billion state budget package are emerging as top Republican lawmakers reveal details of an election-year plan they negotiated behind closed doors with Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf. The no-new-taxes spending package unveiled Tuesday could see floor votes in Pennsylvania's Republican-controlled House and Senate by week's end. The new fiscal year begins July 1. The package increases authorized spending by 2 percent over the current year's enacted budget of $32 billion.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A defense attorney for three members of the radical group MOVE says he's confused why one was paroled this week and two others were denied despite having similar records and recommendations for release from the new Philadelphia District Attorney's office. Debbie Africa is the first of the so-called "MOVE 9" to be released on parole. Attorney Brad Thomson called the parole system's process arbitrary Tuesday, saying Janet Africa and Jeanene Africa have essentially identical records.
ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A northwestern Pennsylvania police officer has convicted on all charges including vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in a fatal off-duty crash last year. The Erie Times-News reports that jurors deliberated for two hours Monday before convicting 47-year-old Erie officer Cheryl Frey in the February 2017 crash on Route 99 in McKean Township that killed 57-year-old Wade Schulze. Frey earlier this year withdrew from a plea agreement with prosecutors.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Lawmakers are moving to reinstate the research provision of Pennsylvania's medical marijuana law, a month after a court decision put it on hold. A state judge said the regulations seemed to require only a minimal commitment to research in order to be licensed. The amendment passed by the House Tuesday says the Legislature's goal is to encourage the partnerships so that patient safety will be improved.
